# Becki TDD

No production code without a failing test first. If you did not watch
the test fail for the right reason, you do not know it tests the right
thing.

`becki-verify` is the last gate. This skill is the first one.

## When it applies

New behavior, bugfixes, and refactors that change behavior. Ask before
skipping on throwaway spikes, generated files, or config-only edits.
A spike that you keep is no longer a spike: delete the exploration and
start here.

## The cycle

1. Write one test for one behavior. Name what should happen.
2. Run this repo's real test command (`scripts/run_tests.sh`,
`npx vitest run`, `swift test`). Watch it fail because the behavior
is missing, not because of a typo.
3. If it passes, you tested existing behavior. Fix the test.
4. Write the smallest production change that makes it pass.
5. Re-run. Keep it green. Then clean names and duplication. Do not add
   behavior during cleanup.
6. Next behavior, next failing test.

Call `becki_check_dead_ends` when the failure looks like a known class.
A 0.85+ hit is "you tried this test or this fix and it failed."

## After a hard-won green

Use `becki-verify` on the surrounding suite. Use `becki-capture` or
`becki-decide` only if the approach would surprise future-you.

## Red flags

| Thought | Reality |
|---|---|
| Too simple to test | Simple code still breaks. The test is the proof. |
| I will test after | Tests written after pass immediately and prove nothing. |
| I already tried it by hand | Manual is not replayable. Write the case. |
| Deleting the untested code is waste | The waste is keeping code you cannot trust. |
| I will keep it as reference | You will adapt it. That is testing after. Delete it. |
| Existing code has no tests | You are changing it. Add the case first. |
| I cannot run the suite here | Then you cannot claim green. Report the blocker. |
